Police have found footprints, a motorcycle and a hat they believe belong to a man missing in South Australia's far north.

The man and his partner were heading to a family property north of Roxby Downs on Saturday when their four-wheel drive became bogged.

He rode off on a motorbike to a hut on the station to gather supplies.

The alarm was raised on Sunday afternoon when family members were unable to contact the couple, who had been near Finniss Springs south of Callanna — a location on the Oodnadatta Track.

The woman was found alive yesterday afternoon about 10 kilometres from the bogged vehicle, at Stuart Creek Station.

Roxby Downs officer in charge Senior Sergeant Sam Thorne said the man was likely riding back to the bogged vehicle but did not make it back.

They believe he would still be trying to get back to where the vehicle had been.

"We've located the motorbike which has broken down," he said.

Some person items were also found.

"We've located what we believe is the missing person's hat and also some equipment that he took from the property," Senior Sergeant Thorne said.

The police helicopter and other aircraft have been involved in the search focused on a location known as Junction Dam and creeks in the area.

Conditions in the area have been hazardous in recent days, with temperatures rising above 40 degrees Celsius.
