Coronavirus Northern Ireland: Police find driver at Giant's Causeway who travelled 50 miles

Police have reiterated coronavirus lockdown advice after a driver was spoken to at the Giant's Causeway.

When approached, it transpired that they had travelled 50 miles to the heritage site.

This is in spite of the NI Executive guidance which prohibit anyone from leaving home without a reasonable excuse.

They also compel the closure of certain premises and gatherings of more than two people are banned.

Penalties ranging from fixed penalty notices to fines of up to £5,000 are being introduced to enforce the new powers under The Health Protection (Coronavirus, Restrictions) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2020.

PSNI Road Policing shared the image of the car at the famous site on social media.

The post read: "We are conducting patrols to encourage you to adhere to the Northern Ireland Executive’s direction on Covid-19.

"We are talking to anyone we see to make sure we all know what we should be doing to keep everyone safe.

"Unfortunately the driver of this car at the Giant's Causeway had driven some 50 miles to visit this iconic place - without MOT, tax or insurance.

"The vehicle has been seized.  #StayHomeSaveLives "

While out and about, the unit praised people for not visiting beauty spots like Ballintoy Harbour.

Of their patrols, they posted on Facebook: "We are conducting patrols to encourage you to adhere to the Northern Ireland Executive’s direction on  #COVID19.

"We are talking to anyone we see to make sure we all know what we should be doing to keep everyone safe."
