Police find body in search for missing Tyneside pensioner Stephen Robertson

A body has been found in the search for a missing man who had not been seen for 24 hours.

Police recovered the body of a man while searching for Stephen Robertson from South Shields on Thursday.

The 63-year-old was reported missing after last being seen at 8.30am on Wednesday.

The body found is believed to be Stephen and his next of kin have been informed and are being supported by officers.

A formal identification process is due to take place and an investigation is being carried out to establish the circumstances surrounding his death.

At this stage, detectives do not believe the death is suspicious.

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said: "Police would like to thank everyone who helped with the search for Stephen, and we would like to ask that his family’s privacy is respected at this difficult time."
