Police find body after reports of man in pond in Radcliffe

Police called to reports of a man in a pond in Bury have found a body.

There was a major response from emergency services near Kirkstall Gardens, Radcliffe, this afternoon shortly before 3pm.

Fire fighters, police and the ambulance service were dispatched to the scene following reports of concern for a man in water.

The fire service sent an underwater rescue unit and crews spent several hours combing a pond near a lodge using rafts and an aquascope.

They ended their searches at 4.23pm but eyewitnesses reported a large number of police remained at the scene and a white forensics tent.

In a statement issued tonight, Greater Manchester Police confirmed a man in his 50s was pronounced dead at the scene.

The death is not being treated as suspicious.

A spokesperson for the fire service said: "At 2.56pm we were called to Kirkstall Gardens in Radcliffe to reports that a man had entered the water.

"We were quickly on the scene with three fire engines from Whitefield, Bury and Heywood, including an underwater unit."

"We assisted North West Ambulance Service and Greater Manchester Police who were also at the scene.

"We commenced searches of the pond at the rear of some lodges."

"We assisted other emergency services colleagues by searching with the underwater unit including an aquascope.

"We stopped searching the pond at 4.23pm and the incident was closed by the fire service at 5.35pm."

GMP said in an updated statement: "At around 2.55pm on Sunday 5 April 2020, police were called to reports of concern for the welfare of a man in water off Kirkstall Gardens, Bury.

"Emergency services attended and a man, in his 50s, was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

"His next of kin has been informed.

"There are no suspicious circumstance surrounding his death."
