Police are fighting plans for a new 24-hour McDonald's at London Bridge station, saying other such branches are a magnet for gang violence.
Capital Arches Group (CAG), a franchise acting for the fast food giant, has applied for a licence to serve food and non-alcoholic drink around the clock at a site in Tooley Street.
Police say other 24-hour McDonald’s restaurants in stations, such as at Liverpool Street, have attracted crime and anti-social behaviour.
In a letter to Southwark council, BTP’s Kate Downs wrote: “Another concerning aspect at the McDonald’s within Waterloo Station is incidents related to gang activity. This includes... theft targeting customers and reports of the outlet being used by potential gang members for loitering and meeting.”
In its application to Southwark council, to be decided on Monday, CAG said it would install CCTV and could hire door supervisors.
A spokesperson for McDonald’s said creating a safe environment was “of the utmost importance for us”.
The Standard has approached CAG for comment.
