Police ferried to Eigg after rare crime on Hebridean island

Police had to ferried to the remote Hebridean isle of Eigg – after the first crime there in years.

Locals called for help following a fire at their community centre but officers had to the taken to the Inner Hebridean island by Mallaig Lifeboat to investigate.

It is believed a man, who is not from Eigg, was arrested and taken back to the mainland.

Police said: “A 40-year-old man will be reported in connection with an alleged fire-raising offence at the Isle of Eigg Community Centre.

“The incident happened around 9am on Sunday.”

Islanders were shocked their peaceful, crime-free tranquillity had been shattered.

Maggie Fyffe, of the Isle of Eigg Heritage Trust, said: “We are all a bit shocked by this incident. It is the first crime here anybody can remember for many years. The person who was taken away is not from the island.

“We are assessing the damage, but it’s not thought to be extensive.”

About five miles long by three miles wide, Eigg lies 10 miles off the west coast and is home to 109 people.

The island is owned by the community-led Isle of Eigg Heritage Trust, which bought the island for £1.5million in 1997 – largely funded by a mystery donation from a millionairess.
