Police fatally shoot suspect after pursuit marked by gunfire

Nov. 09--Los Angeles police fatally shot a man wanted on an assault charge Saturday night after a pursuit that involved multiple exchanges of gunfire, authorities said.

The unidentified suspect was spotted on an East Los Angeles street by LAPD'S Hollenbeck gang unit at about 9:45 p.m. but fled in a vehicle when officers attempted to place him in custody, Officer Norma Eisenman said.

Several patrol cars and SWAT units pursued the suspect, who fired on the officers at several points in a chase that ended on Huron Street in Cypress Park. Details on where the chase occurred and at what speeds were not available.

Gunfire was reported at three to five locations along the way, Eisenman said.

After the suspect was cornered, a police SWAT team attempted to negotiate his surrender. The man pointed a shotgun at officers, who opened fire, Eisenman said. The suspect died at the scene.

No officers were injured. The suspect had been wanted on a charge of assault with a deadly weapon stemming from an Oct. 30 incident. Two other suspects in that case were already in custody, Eisenman said.

As is typical in officer-involved shootings, the exact circumstances of the incident are under investigation.
