Police explain why Snapchat video was sent to 2,000 children

Children as young as 11 are being urged to report serious crime in a campaign using the social media service Snapchat.

The office of the Merseyside Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) and Crimestoppers are hoping to encourage young people to report wrongdoing anonymously in a bid to break down the wall of silence protecting serious criminals.

The scheme was referenced in a report on efforts to tackle organised crime published by the PCC, Jane Kennedy.

Part of the report focussed on efforts to tackle serious criminality in Sefton using social media.

It said: "It was acknowledged that many young people were not aware that they could report criminal activity anonymously using the Crimestoppers website.

"During August, Crimestoppers targeted a campaign aimed at all Snapchat users in Sefton aged 11-22 years.

"The campaign saw 2,187 young people access the video with 222 watching the whole coverage.

"Work to encourage reporting in Netherton and Southport areas has been undertaken through the development of Crimestoppers Facebook page which was shared by both the Local Policing Team and the OPCC with networks and partners."
