Police explain why officers are out in force in city centre

People heading into Liverpool city centre may notice more police officers than usual.

A police van is stationed on Church Street, while officers are patrolling different parts of the city centre this evening.

Merseyside Police said "there's no reason for alarm" as they explained the reason behind the police presence.

A police spokesperson said: "You may see some of our high visibility patrols out in the city centre this evening - there's no reason for alarm, we're just providing some reassurance to the public whilst at the same time acting as a deterrent to criminals.

"If you see us say hello!"

It comes after Sunday's terror attack at Liverpool Women's Hospital which saw a taxi explode in the hospital car park shortly before 11am.

Rutland Avenue, which is located close to Sefton Park in the L17 area, remains the main focus of the counter terrorism investigation.

In an update on Thursday, Counter Terror Police North West said their work at Liverpool Women's Hospital will continue over the next few days, with the scene there not likely to be released before Sunday.
