Police explain why armed officers are patrolling Nottingham's Old Market Square

Nottinghamshire Police has confirmed why armed officers have been seen patrolling the city centre during Nottingham's Christmas Market.

The force has insisted it is 'not unusual' and that the presence occurs every year during the festive season to ensure public safety.

In addition to the the armed presence, police cars have also been spotted around the Old Market Square while the Winter Wonderland takes place.

Assistant Chief Constable Rob Griffin, said: “Officers and armed officers are once again attending the Christmas Market in the Old Market Square while it is taking place throughout November and December as reassurance to the public that we are there should anyone needs us.

“Patrolling the market is something we do every single year when it takes place, so it is not unusual to see officers walking within the city centre and throughout the festivities that take place within the centre.

“We are here to protect the public and will always continue to do so as they enjoy the Christmas festivities within Nottingham and enjoy their time walking throughout the market and are kept safe.”
