Police explain what will happen to people travelling to Liverpool from Tier 3 areas

Police have explained what will happen to people travelling to Liverpool from Tier 3 areas.

People around the country are being encouraged to follow the current guidance and to abide by the rules of the Tier their area has been placed in.

Officers will be on patrol around the city this weekend to make sure people are not flouting the rules and have said that they will enforce fines where necessary.

In a statement, a spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: "Merseyside Police will continue to encourage people to observe restrictions introduced to keep people safe and protect the NHS.

"People must adhere to the restrictions in place in the area in which they live, depending on the Tier they have been placed into, even if travelling to an area in a different Tier.

"Everyone in Tier 2 and 3 should aim to reduce the number of journeys they make where possible, and should avoid travel or overnight stays in other areas, other than when necessary.

"We will continue to have high visibility patrols on foot and on our roads, and officers will continue to remind the public of the rules, encourage people to adhere to them and explain why it is so important.

"Where blatant breaches of legislation are seen, we will not hesitate to take enforcement action."

Chief Inspector Andy Creer said: “The people of Merseyside have shown a huge amount of patience and commitment in their efforts to help defeat this virus.

“We are in Tier 2 thanks to the hard work of all those people, and if we want to follow this path out of further restrictions and back to normality, we must persevere and continue to do what is asked.

“Throughout the pandemic our officers have proactively encouraged people across Merseyside to follow the restrictions that have been in place, and the response has been fantastic.

“A small minority have chosen to deliberately flout the restrictions, and when efforts to encourage those people to adhere to the rules have not been heeded, enforcement has been necessary.

“In order to protect the NHS, and each other, we need to continue acting sensibly. Keep social distancing, keep wearing face coverings where needed, keep washing hands and only travel to other Tiers if it is necessary.”
