Police explain what football fans can expect in Nottingham after Euro 2020 final

Nottinghamshire Police have revealed what the public can expect tonight after the Euro 2020 final.

Big crowds of people are expected across Nottinghamshire, especially in the city centre around Old Market Square.

Police have been deployed across the county to make sure everyone is celebrating safely and responsibly.

There have been huge gatherings for previous matches - with the highest amount of people yet expected for England's first ever European Championship final appearance on Sunday, July 11.

Chief Constable of Nottinghamshire Police Craig Guildford has praised the public for their efforts so far and revealed the scale of the operation set to be rolled out tonight.

He told Nottinghamshire Live: "More of the same would be my message to people in Nottinghamshire.

"I think people have been extremely well behaved. There has been a very low number of arrests for drunk and disorderly behaviour, less than we get on a usual Friday or Saturday evening.

"There are lots of additional resources with officers on duty right across the county, not just in the city. It's a big operation for police - we have a bespoke operation in place with a commander and lots of dedicated additional resources.

"I'm looking forward to the game as I'm sure everyone else is. I want to thank all the officers and other members of staff who are protecting the public instead of watching the game."

After England's win against Denmark, the force arrested three people - two for drunk and disorderly behaviour and another for causing a public nuisance.

Inspector Paul Gummer, of Nottinghamshire Police, said previously: "Most people who went out in the city centre last night were great. Everyone had a great time after the fantastic result from England and enjoyed themselves safely and responsibly.

"Long may that continue and we look forward to welcoming people back for the final on Sunday and hopefully we will have plenty more reason for cheer.

"As with any big event there's often some that push it that bit too far. But I'm happy to say we only arrested two people for being drunk and disorderly and one for causing a public nuisance but that is nothing out of the ordinary for a city centre during the night time economy."

Meanwhile, the city council have warned of delays to public transport and trams due to the game - and have even planned to close one road in the city centre due to the game.

A statement from Nottingham City Council reads: "Friar Lane at the junction of Spaniel Row will be closed to all traffic from 9.30pm on Sunday until the Old Market Square returns to normality.

"The city centre is expected to be busier than usual with large crowds of fans expected to gather in the Old Market Square and around the city centre."
