Police evacuate homes following gas leak in Rochdale

Police evacuated 12 homes in Heywood this morning following a gas leak.

Emergency services were called to Peel Lane just after 10.30am on Friday (May 21).

A large road closure was put in place while fire crews dealt with a burst gas pipe.

Two fire engines from Bury and Rochdale helped GMP officers evacuate people from 12 nearby houses.

The road was reopened around an hour later. No casualties have been reported, a spokesman for North West Ambulance Service confirmed.

In a statement, NWAS said: “We have one response vehicle currently on scene supporting the operation. We were called to the scene following reports of a gas leak.

“No casualties currently.”

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: “Just after 10:30am on Friday 21st May, firefighters were called to reports of a gas leak on Peel Lane, Heywood.

“Two fire engines from Bury and Rochdale arrived quickly, and assisted colleagues from Greater Manchester Police to evacuate people from 12 nearby houses.”
