Police have been authorised to use enhanced stop and search powers in Levenshulme after a stabbing which left a 19-year-old fighting for his life. The teenager is in a critical condition after being 'stabbed in the neck' outside a shop on Stockport Road on Sunday night.
Following the incident, police were granted a 24 hour section 60 order - running until noon on Tuesday - allowing officers to stop and search people in designated areas. Roads covered by the order include Alma Road/Highfield Road, Nelstrop Road North, Errwood Road and Crossley Road/Cringle Road.
Supt Helen Critchley of GMP’s City of Manchester South district said: "We understand the use of a Section 60 can cause concern to local residents; however, we use these powers only when proportionate and necessary. By enforcing the Section 60 in the area, we will work to minimise any violent behaviour and prevent any further serious incidents going forward as our main priority is to keep the public safe.

Stockport Road remains closed this afternoon following the stabbing. Businesses in the area have been told it is expected to be shut for the majority of the day.
Forensics officers have been at the scene while an investigation takes place. No arrests have been made.
A number of witnesses have told the Manchester Evening News the man appeared to have been stabbed in the neck. One man, who came to the victim's aid, said: "It was a nasty thing to see.
"I'm a trained first-aider so I rushed over and helped give him CPR. But he seemed in a bad way - his heart literally stopped as I was there."
Insp Matthew Hamer of GMP’s Major Incident Team said: "An active investigation has been underway since late last night and will continue into today as we look to identify those responsible
"A scene will continue to be in place whilst we conduct further searches and enquiries with an increased police presence in the area. GMP are taking a robust approach to knife crime in the Greater Manchester area and this is no exception."
