Police drop murder probe into death of 70-year-old Wigan woman

Police are no longer treating the death of an elderly woman in Wigan as murder.

The 70-year-old died at a home on Wigan Road, Standish, at 3am yesterday (Tuesday) despite the best efforts of paramedics.

Following her death, the ambulance service contacted police and a 72-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder.

However, after a post-mortem and forensic examinations of the house officers have concluded that the woman had been injured after falling.

The man has been released with no further action taken.

Detective Inspector Philip Housley of GMP’s Wigan division, said: “Following the woman’s tragic death yesterday, it was important that the necessary steps were taken to ensure the incident was investigated thoroughly and properly.

“Having received the results from the post mortem and completed a full forensic investigation, we are now satisfied that her death was non suspicious and the man has been released with no further action taken.

“Our thoughts remain with the woman’s family at this distressing time.”
