Police drama 'Blue Lights' set in Northern Ireland will start filming in Belfast in the new year

There's exciting news for crime drama lovers as a new Police series set in Northern Ireland is preparing to start filming in Belfast in the new year.

Blue Lights will tell the story of rookie police officers working in contemporary Belfast and is created by the writers of The Salisbury Poisonings, Adam Patterson and Declan Lawn.

The Northern Irish duo and the series writing team recently met with the Lord Mayor of Belfast, Kate Nicholl, to discuss their upcoming series which has been inspired by research and interviews of serving police officers in Northern Ireland.

They also announced that filming is set to commence in Northern Ireland in January.

Taking to Twitter, screenwriter Declan Lawn wrote: "Thanks so much to Lord Mayor @KateNicholl for having #bluelights writing team in for a chat about the new series.

"Filming starts in January. Great to have so much support for it. As a filming destination Belfast rocks!"

The series was announced as part of the BBC and Northern Ireland Screen partnership agreement and is described as a "fast-paced, frightening, and funny insight into what happens when the idealism of the police college classroom meets the reality of life, in a precinct that's as starkly divide as it is terrifyingly dangerous."

Speaking previously on the commissioning of Blue Lights, the writers said: "Belfast is our home town, and to be able to write a show set in the city we know and love is one of the great privileges of our lives.

"It's a real joy to be bringing a major BBC drama back home."
