Police don't want a KFC to open on Cardiff's St Mary Street

Police have objected to plans for a KFC on Cardiff's St Mary Street due to crime and disorder worries.

The fast food giant wants to open up on the famous street in the capital, but South Wales Police have formally objected.

KFC have submitted a licence for a new site at the former Papa Panda Chinese buffet restraunt.

Despite the objections, work already appears to be underway and signs in the window advertise the KFC is "coming soon".

In a letter to Cardiff Council , police have asked for the licence to be rejected and if it is granted they've asked for a number of conditions to be imposed, including banning anyone under 16 being served after 8pm.

The letter, dated October 16 and issued by the police 's licensing department, said: "This objection is made under the licensing objective of; the prevention of crime and disorder.

"The police will object under the Cardiff Council's Cumulative Impact Policy."

The policy aims to prevent too many premises of a certain type in an area that could draw in large groups of people, leading to problems of crime and disorder.

The letter from police adds that if the application is granted they ask for a number of conditions to apply, including CCTV and signs asking customers to leave in a "quiet orderly fashion".

They also ask that bouncers are at the restaurant on "major event days", and on Fridays, Saturdays, any Sunday before a bank holiday and New Year's Eve from 9pm until close.

It also asks that anyone under 16 will not be served after 8pm unless accompanied by a "responsible adult".

KFC have submitted a licence that would allow them to be open from 10am until 12.30pm seven days a week.

A letter sent by the fast food chain in response have asked for a number of the conditions to be removed or ammended.

In response to banning under 16s after 8pm it said: "We are a family restaurant, so cannot agree to this provision from 8pm."

The Cardiff Council licensing sub-comittee will look at the application at a meeting on Friday.

KFC has been asked to comment.
