Police dog Kaos 'lively' after surgery following stabbing

Brisbane police dog Kaos has responded well to surgery and is recovering after being stabbed in the neck but is due to undergo a second procedure.

Kaos was assisting police on a chase in the northern Brisbane suburb of Gordon Park on Sunday when one of the suspects stabbed him in the neck with a 12-centimetre knife.

The dog was stabilised at the scene by his handler before being placed in the care of a veterinarian.

Senior Sergeant Sean Baxendell from the dog squad said the seven-year-old German shepherd was "lively and well".

"He's very happy, engaging with everyone," he said.

"It's incredible to see, to think he sustained such a serious wound and he's up and about."

'It's brought everyone together'

The police dog is expected to undergo further surgery to assess nerve damage and ensure the wound is clean.

Officers expect Kaos to return to work in four weeks, if the second surgery goes well.

Senior Sergeant Baxendell said many officers had visited the vet surgery where Kaos was admitted to show their support to the dog and his handler.

"The dog squad is a very tight group and it has brought everyone together," he said.

"The vet surgery has seen a lot of handlers there for Kaos's stay."

Kaos is one of 17 general purpose dogs in the Brisbane region, looked after by 10 drug dog handlers.

A 21-year-old Milton man and a 24-year-old Enoggera man appeared in Pine Rivers Magistrates Court on Monday charged with serious animal cruelty, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, serious assault of police and obstructing police.
