Police have seized more than £1 million of cannabis from a lorry at Cairnryan ferry terminal after a sniffer dog discovered the stash during routine checks at the port.
Police Dog Gizmo flagged a lorry to his handler while on patrol at the harbour near Stranraer at around 3am on Wednesday August 10. Officers found cannabis with an estimated street value of around £1.1 million inside.
The 46-year-old male driver of the lorry was arrested and charged in connection with drug supply offences. He was expected to appear in court on Thursday after being snared by the law enforcement pooch.
Bosses at Police Scotland have hailed PD Gizmo's efforts in the ongoing fight against drug dealers trying to ship substances into Scotland by any means. And the sniffer dog has picked up a few fans on social media for his work.
One said: "Well done Gizmo - give that dog a big bone." Another added: "Well done Gizmo, hope you got an extra treat."
A force spokesperson said: “Tackling illegal drugs and removing them from our communities is a priority for Police Scotland and part of that is targeting the transport routes used to courier drugs.
"We will continue to work to stop criminals bringing harm and misery to our communities. We rely on the support of the public to build intelligence on drug-related issues so that we can act on their concerns.
“We would urge anyone who is aware of any information about the supply of drugs to report the matter to police on 101, or anonymously through independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
