One police dog had a very busy week after they helped track down to wanted men in separate incidents during a matter of days.
PD Colt assisted officers in Bangor on Tuesday, August 3, locating and detaining a male wanted for a robbery offence and recall to prison.
Before long the suspect surrendered himself, and was returned to prison.
Police dog Colt’s second success of the week was in Holyhead on the following Tuesday evening, when he attended the home address for a suspect wanted for domestic assault.
After they spotted the Colt, Cheshire and North Wales Police Dogs unit claim he thought he could outrun him.
Colt tracked and detained the man, and the suspect was arrested.
PD Colt is fairly new to the dog squad and only qualified to become a general practice dog on June 24 this year with his handler.
The alliance currently has 21 dogs which provide support on the front line including general purpose dogs, and specialist dogs who find firearms and drugs. They work across North Wales and Cheshire.
It is currently rolling out body armour to each dog, custom made and fitted following Finn’s Law, which passed through parliament in 2019 to toughen sentencing for injuring service dogs.
Chief Inspector Simon Newell said: “The Alliance has been testing kit to ensure it is comfortable for the dog, doesn’t affect movement and speed, and keeps the dogs as safe as possible in what are often perilous circumstances.”
