Police dog Bomber receives a bravery award for protecting his handler while coming under attack from a violent suspect

A police dog has received a bravery award for protecting his handler during a violent arrest.

Bomber was hit and even bitten by a man he was helping to detain.

Now the dog and his handler PC Stuart Oram have received the National Police Service Dog Bravery Achievement award following the incident in 2018.

Police dog Bomber, since retired, received his award last week but died a few days later.

The animal and his handler were deployed to detain a suspect as he ran away from the scene of an alleged assault in Wythenshawe.

On reaching the suspect, Bomber received a violent and painful blow to his body but he stood fast and managed to keep hold of the man, according to Greater Manchester Police.

The suspect 'became increasingly violent' towards Bomber, repeatedly hitting and biting him and refusing to let Bomber go, said the force.

Even when PC Oram reached them and attempted to detain the suspect again, the man continued to attack Bomber and 'was determined to cause serious harm to the dog', said GMP.

More officers arrived and assisted in detaining the man, arresting him on suspicion of assault and criminal damage.

Even though Bomber had suffered 'prolonged and repeated attacks', he 'didn’t give up and protected his handler throughout the extreme violence', said GMP.

"Bomber carried out his duty despite suffering severe pain from his injuries and detained the suspect until further patrols arrived," said their statement.

PC Oram was handed a GMP award for his outstanding dog handling and has now been recognised with a national gong.

The pair received the National Police Service Dog Bravery Achievement award for their efforts during the arrest.

Bomber, who had retired, was handed his award last week but died a few days later. The injuries he suffered in 2018 are not believed to have contributed to his death.

PC Oram said: "It's fantastic that Bomber's actions have been rewarded as I don’t know what would have happened if he wasn't there to help and protect me.

"Sadly PD Bomber recently passed away but I was proud to work with him for six years until his retirement where he spent his last days surrounded by his favourite things at home with me."

The force said: "GMP are very proud of the commitment and dedication of PC Oram, PD Bomber and the whole dog handling team for the work they do on a daily basis.

"Police dogs are a vital part of policing and of the GMP family and incidents like this show how important their work is."
