Police divers return to dock as gun search continues

Specialist police diving crews are continuing their search of Liverpool's waterfront as part of a crack down on gun crime.

Divers have returned for a second search of Princes Dock today, February 4, after coming away on Wednesday empty handed.

The operation is being carried out in response to new intelligence, with crews searching the water for guns and other weapons.

Vehicles from the North West Police Underwater Search & Marine Unit were pictured parked up at the dock this morning, with searches expected to be ongoing throughout the day.

Merseyside Police confirmed to the ECHO today that no weapons have been discovered or retrieved from the water at this stage.

In a statement on Wednesday, a spokesperson said: "We are today, Wednesday 3rd February, carrying out searches as part of our ongoing investigations into gun crime on Merseyside.

"Officers are currently at Princes Dock in Liverpool city centre with colleagues from the North Underwater Search Team and are responding to intelligence in relation to the use and storage of weapons as part of our commitment to remove guns from our streets.

"At this stage it is not known if any weapons have been discovered or retrieved."
