Police disperse ‘large number’ of cars at meet on Clifton Downs

Police dispersed a “large number” of cars which had gathered on Clifton Downs over the weekend.

Avon and Somerset Police were called to a suspected “unauthorised” car meet on Saturday (August 15) at 8.10pm.

Cars were reported travelling up Ladies Mile and Whiteladies Road over the course of the evening.

Officers also closed a number of roads and issued a dispersal notice in order to stop further cars joining the gathering.

The road closures were lifted at around 12.30am today (August 16).

A spokesperson for the force said: “Officers attended to monitor any offences and to ensure public safety was maintained.

“They found a large number of vehicles on The Downs, therefore road closures were put in place to prevent more cars accessing the area. A dispersal notice was then issued.

“The road closures were lifted at about 12.30am this morning.

“Officers also responded to further calls last night around car meets at Avonmeads and Cribbs Causeway.”

Almost a year ago, police attended a gathering of over 300 motorists on the Downs.

During the August 2020 meet, motorists were reportedly driving dangerously on the roads surrounding the Downs and endangering public safety.

Avon and Somerset Police have previously warned that dangerous driving would incur action against those responsible.

Police tweeted at the time of that incident: "Public safety is our utmost priority and action will be taken against anyone found to be breaking the law or endangering others."
