Police disperse group of 40 people in Woodborough believed to be carol singing

Police officers were forced to disperse a group of around 40 people following reports from "concerned residents" over what is thought to have been a carol singing event.

Nottinghamshire Police says it was called to Main Street in Woodborough at around 5.40pm on Sunday, December 20.

The force confirmed officers had engaged with the group which eventually dispersed shortly afterwards.

Neighbourhood Sergeant Helen Walker said: “Officers from our neighbourhood team attended a large gathering in Main Street, Woodborough, at around 5.40pm yesterday after reports from concerned residents.

“Our officers engaged with the people there and the gathering, which consisted of about 40 people, eventually dispersed.

“We understand how difficult things are for people at the moment, but we are here for the whole community. We must respond when people’s actions are not only breaking Government rules but are also making other people feel worried and unsafe.

“Although we are all in this pandemic together, we are all experiencing it differently and it’s really important to remember that our actions have an impact on other people.

“Throughout the various periods of Government restrictions, we have used enforcement as a last resort, making sure we engage with people and explain the rules before taking any action. No fines have been issued following this incident.

“I would like to wish the people of Woodborough a very happy and safe Christmas, and I hope we will eventually see a safe return to community events in 2021.”
