Police discover huge cannabis factory after car smashes into Cardiff house

Police have discovered a huge cannabis factory after a car crashed into a house in Cardiff.

South Wales Police initially responded to reports of a car crashing into a house in Cathays, but later found a massive amount of cannabis plants inside the property.

Posting on Twitter, the force said on Monday morning that the owner of the property "surprisingly wasn't home" at the time of the incident. They continued by asking the homeowner to contact them to "have a little chat" about what was found.

Pictures shared by officers from the South Wales Policing Roads Unit show a grey car driven head-on into the house and caused extensive damage to the front of the property, with the windows seemingly knocked through leaving the front room exposed.

Inside the house on Cranbrook Street, a huge number of cannabis plants can be seen, with lamps and heaters also visible in what appears to be an extensive operation.

Speaking on Monday afternoon, third-year university student Rowan said: She said: "I heard the crash, it sounded like a tin can being crushed - I assumed they had hit a lamppost. I went to have a look as I have was not really sure what had happened and I thought I saw a curtain sticking out.

Rowan, who said she called the police shortly before midnight, said: "The police came and I realised something was up as the police were knocking on the door first instead [of speaking to the driver]. Instead of talking to the people that crashed into the house they were bursting in, police were going in and ripping stuff up - I knew something more serious had happened.

"I was watching out of concern that someone has been hurt. We'd seen the bins being put out the house before, we just assumed it was a normal student house Iike the rest of the street."

The South Wales Policing Roads Unit dealt with a number of incidents over the scorching weekend - including antisocial behaviour at a car meet in Rassau, at which officers said they seized vehicles for a range of alleged offences.

They also revealed that a motorist in South Wales failed a roadside drug test - just two days after passing their driving test.

South Wales Police have been approached for comment.
