A police detective in central Massachusetts made a startling discovery when searching a suspicious truck parked outside a Red Roof Inn in Sutton. The detective found a U.S. Army rocket launcher, identified as the M190 training model of the M72 light anti-tank weapon, hidden under the backseat of the vehicle. Along with the rocket launcher, crack cocaine was also found in the truck.
Upon finding the launcher, the detective's primary concern was ensuring the safety of everyone involved. After confirming that the launcher was unloaded, it was secured, and a thorough search of the vehicle was conducted to rule out the presence of any explosives or rockets.
The driver of the truck was evasive when questioned about how he obtained the launcher and his intentions with it. This lack of clarity raised suspicions further.
Authorities contacted the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to handle the situation involving the rocket launcher. The driver was charged with possession of crack cocaine and possession/control of an incendiary device.
The unusual circumstances leading to the discovery of the rocket launcher included the driver's behavior of sitting in the parked truck for an extended period outside the hotel. The detective found it peculiar that the driver avoided entering the hotel and remained parked away from the main entrance.
Following the discovery of drug paraphernalia in the truck, the detective and another officer proceeded to search the vehicle, leading to the unexpected find of the rocket launcher concealed among clothing beneath the backseat.
The U.S. Army, upon being informed of the situation, stated that they needed more time to investigate before providing any further comments on the matter.
