The men were reported to have approached the security guard, taken the cash box and then made off from the scene in a black Audi S3.
It is believed that two other people may also have been inside the car at the time.
The security guard was uninjured but left shaken by the incident.
A spokesperson from Merseyside Police said: "The suspects are described as around 5ft 11in tall and of medium build.
"At the time of the incident, one of the males was wearing a grey hoody and grey trousers and one of the males was wearing a black jacket and cargo style trousers. Both were wearing black scarves to cover their faces, black caps and black gloves."
"Witness enquiries have established that an attempt was made to use the Audi, to break into the cash box on Laurus Road at around 11.02am. The box was located and recovered at Scafell Walk at 1.43pm.
"CCTV, forensic and witness enquiries into the incident are ongoing."
Detective Sergeant Mark Lawrenson said: “Targeting someone going about their business in the community is disgraceful and we are determined to find the people responsible and bring them to justice.
“If you were in Cables Retail Park yesterday morning and witnessed the incident, saw anything suspicious, or witnessed a black Audi S3 making off from the area then please let us know.
“I would also ask for anyone who was on the car park of the retail park who has a dash cam to check it in case they captured anything significant. Any information you hold could be vital to our investigation.”
