Police could fine drinkers in pubs when they reopen from July 4

Police could fine drinkers in pubs in England when they reopen from July 4.

Restaurants, pubs and cafes as well as hairdressers have been given the green light to reopen next month in the latest easing of lockdown restrictions.

The longed for news was announced by the Prime Minister on Tuesday (June 23) as he said the five tests to stop the spread of coronavirus were still being met.

But he continues to warn that the government "will not hesitate to apply the brakes" at regional, or even national, level if an outbreak becomes apparent.

"Today we can say, our long, national hibernation is becoming to come to an end," Boris Johnson said during his address, adding that "caution" does remain.

And now Downing Street has said that police could go into pubs and fine those enjoying the new freedoms if they see "large and irresponsible" gatherings.

The spokesman said: "What the police will be able to do is break up large and irresponsible gathering of over 30 people.

"We have a test and trace system in place. If there are particular outbreaks that are linked to premises, it will be easy to track those back."

There will, however, be an exemption for pubs and restaurants with a big indoor capacity.
