Police cordon off wasteland after man arrives at hospital with 'serious' facial injuries

Police are investigating after a man turned up to hospital with 'serious' injuries to his face.

Officers were called to a patch of wasteland between Kiribati Way and Browning Street, Leigh, in the early hours of this morning (Wednesday September 2).

It follows a man in his 30s presenting himself at hospital with facial injuries.

The injuries have been described as serious and the man remains in hospital for treatment.

An eyewitness reported that the man had been 'jumped' on the land, near to Marsh Playing Fields.

The person, who asked not to be named, added: "I was taking my daughter to school this morning and I saw the cordon and a black riot van.

"There were lots of police at the end of Browning Street. There is a large field behind that and cordon is all the way to the other side."

A woman living in Browning Street added: "I didn't hear anything during the night, it surprised me when I woke up to see the van parked outside.

"I can't believe that I didn't hear any police cars or ambulances when it happened though, I don't even know what time it was to be honest."

The remaining police van left the scene shortly before 1.30pm but a cordon is in place, blocking off the wasteland from walkers.

Anyone that may have seen anything or has any information can call Greater Manchester Police on 0161 856 7254, quoting incident number 334 of 02/09/20.

Alternatively, contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
