Police cordon off street after woman dies in house fire as a 'number of dogs' rescued

A woman has died in a house fire this morning, with police cordoning off the street.

The woman in her 70s was confirmed dead at the scene with emergency services rescuing "a number of dogs".

Fire crews rushed to Mallorie Road in Norton in Stoke-on-Trent at around 11.20am this morning.

Paramedics were also dispatched, but nothing could be done to save the woman, StokeonTrentLive reports.

A Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "We were called to reports of a house fire on Mallorie Road, Norton shortly before 11.20am this morning.

"Crews from Hanley, Sandyford and Newcastle attended. Sadly, a woman in her 70s was pronounced dead at the scene by colleagues at West Midlands Ambulance Service.

"A number of dogs were rescued from the scene. A fire investigation is underway but, at this time, there are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances."

Police have said the fire is not being treated as suspicious.

A Staffordshire Police spokesman said: "Officers attended to support colleagues at Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service.

"Sadly, a woman in her 70s was pronounced dead at the scene by colleagues at West Midlands Ambulance Service.

"Inquiries are underway but the incident is not being treated as suspicious at this time."

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: "We were called by the fire service at 11.17am to reports of a property fire in Mallorie Road, Norton.

"An ambulance and a paramedic officer attended. Sadly one woman was confirmed dead on scene."
