Police cordon off Northumberland beach after ammunition found

Police have cordoned off part of a beach in Northumberland after ammunition was found.

Police were called to Newbiggin-by-the-Sea on Thursday afternoon following reports that the items had been discovered in the sand.

Officers have put a cordon in place and remain on scene while the ammunition is recovered.

An investigation has now been launched.

Pictures taken at the scene show the large cordon in place and specialist police search teams in attendance.

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said: “We can confirm we were called to Newbiggin-by-the-Sea after reports that ammunition had been found on the beach.

"Officers have attended and the ammunition is in the process of being recovered.

"Enquiries to establish who the items belong to are now ongoing.”
