Police cordon off main road in north Manchester after crash

Police have cordoned off a main road in north Manchester tonight after a crash.

The two-vehicle smash happened on Blackley New Road in Blackley at around 6.40pm.

Firefighters, police officers and ambulance crews were called to the scene.

A vehicle involved in the crash was 'isolated' and the scene was 'made safe' by fire crews, a spokesperson for the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said.

It has not yet been confirmed whether anyone was seriously injured.

Pictures taken at the scene this evening show a stretch of the road cordoned off between Old Market Street and Riverdale Road.

A badly-damaged white Ford is inside the cordon.

Debris from the crash can be seen strewn across the road.

People are being asked to avoid the area.

A spokesperson for GMFRS said: “At around 6.40pm this evening, one fire engine from Blackley fire station was called to a report of a road traffic collision involving two vehicles on Blackley New Road, Manchester.

“Upon arrival, firefighters isolated one vehicle and made the scene safe before handing over to colleagues from Greater Manchester Police.

"The crew was in attendance for around 40 minutes.”

In a tweet, TfGM said: "Blackley New Road, Crumpsall is closed in both directions between Old Market Street and Riverside Road due to a road traffic collision.

"Please find alternative route."
