Anyone who witnessed the incident or who has any information is asked to contact police.

Detective Inspector Catherine Walsh said: "These are the early stages of an investigation, during which we are working to establish exactly what happened tonight, and preserve any evidence.

"If you were in the area, passing by or live locally, you could be able to help. Your CCTV, dashcam, doorbell footage may present us with opportunities to find those responsible for this incident and quickly take them and their weapon off the streets.

"Gun crime in Merseyside has fallen dramatically in the past few years, due in no small part to those people prepared to speak to us about such incidents, directly or anonymously. However you choose to tell us, please come forward and we will take action."

If you witnessed the incident, or have any information contact police on Twitter @MerPolCC or Facebook ‘Merseyside Police Contact Centre’ with any information, with reference 815 of 20th February.
