Police cordon off flip-flop in hunt for driver who 'legged it' after being pulled over by officers

Police cordoned off a flip-flop as they attempted to track down a driver who "legged it" after being pulled over by police.

Derbyshire Police officers surrounded the "slider" shoe with four cones and police tape after the suspect fled the scene in the early hours of Monday morning.

The Ford Fiesta driver failed to stop for police in Clay Cross. When he was eventually pulled over, he “legged it" from the scene, the force's armed policing unit said.

Officers said as well as leaving the flip-flop behind, the suspect had left his ID and mobile phone in the car.

In a tweet, the force's armed policing unit said they were assisted by a dog unit and the roads policing unit.

Derbyshire roads policing unit responded to the tweet with a picture of the flip-flop and poked fun at their colleagues, saying: "Proper collision scene management is not to be sniffed at.

"And they're called sliders now...fuddy duddies."

Social media users shared the Derbyshire Police's photo on Twitter, with one commenter calling it: "the Cinderella of the crime world."

Basia Cummings also wrote: "It is a slider that they have carefully, diligently cordoned. I think this is the most British thing I have ever seen."

A police spokesman said the picture of the flip-flop being cordoned off "was a joke between two teams".
