Police cordon off Edinburgh beauty spot amid reports of person in water

Police have launched a major search and rescue operation at an Edinburgh beauty spot amid reports of a struggling swimmer.

Officers have descended on Threipmuir Reservoir in the Pentlands following a series of panicked calls from locals.

The force helicopter was dispatched shortly after 5:35pm after reports a dinghy had overturned in the water.

At least four police vehicles are on site, with officers combing the area and speaking to visitors as part of their enquiries.

It is currently unknown how long the search operation will continue for, but police have cordoned off the area.

The picturesque body of water is a popular summer spot for locals and visitors alike, with dozens flocking there to make the most of the sunny weather.

It is also popular among wild swimmers, but signage warning them to be careful is present along the banks.

Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) crews and ambulance teams have also joined the search and rescue party.

Police say enquiries are ongoing.
