Police cordon off derelict tower block following fire

Police cordoned off a derelict tower block following a fire.

Firefighters and officers were called to Union Street in Egremont at around 4.50pm today. There were four fire engines, police vans and cars at the scene following reports of a fire at a derelict tower block.

Charter House, which was renamed to the Union Building in 2017, is located on land between Church Street and Union Street in Egremont. It has stood empty for around five years and there are currently no active planning applications in relation to the tower.

Back in June, the ECHO spoke to residents who lived near Charter House to speak to them about what life is like living near to the derelict tower block. A number of people said there have been multiple incidents of anti-social behaviour. The tower block has also been boarded up.

Tracy Whiteside said: “It’s a nightmare, the kids are wrecking it. They are going in all the time. It’s just a mess but it is an eyesore isn’t it?” She added: “We get it all the time because they throw balls over and knocking everything down and then we have to report it.

"They just break in, trash the things. They have put the boards up and everything. They are all playing football and bouncing balls around and breaking the windows. They think it is funny to break windows. It’s a shame really isn’t it?"

Photos of the scene show a police cordon in place at the tower block and nearby residential streets. Two police cars were at the cordon and four fire engines.

A police van was also at the scene with around 10 officers.
