Police cordon, forensic investigators and 'air ambulance' at scene in Withington amid reports of a stabbing

Police descended on a street in Withington on Sunday (May 21) following unconfirmed reports of a stabbing.

Heysham Avenue and Halebank Avenue were cordoned off and an air ambulance is understood to have landed in a field nearby after the reported attack. A number of officers remained at the police tape as crime scene investigators and detectives conducted investigations throughout Sunday evening.

Residents living nearby, including parents with young children, spoke of their horror at seeing police and paramedics swarm the quiet street. Others claimed that at least one victim had been stabbed in the neck.

One woman, who lives on adjoining Golborne Avenue told the M.E.N: "I was in my living room and just heard the sirens and saw police flying down the road. A helicopter was flying over my house and landed nearby.

"I saw young lads running down the road and when I came out, everyone was in the street. They were saying that somebody had been stabbed.

"The ambulance was there for hours. I have two children and have never had any problems here since I moved in last March, but it is very concerning and worrying to see."

Other witnesses echoed reports of somebody being injured in a reported stabbing, as one added: "We saw all the police and it was very worrying. We heard that someone had been stabbed and they were still looking for the man."

Another eyewitness made unconfirmed claims that a man had been stabbed in the neck and chest in the incident.

A number of police vehicles and CSI vans were pictured at the scene throughout Sunday afternoon. Full details about the nature of the incident and the condition of those involved is yet to be confirmed.

Greater Manchester Police and the North West Ambulance Service have been contacted for details.
