Police continue battle to remove drug dealers from The Meadows

Police in The Meadows are spending "the majority of their time" targeting hot spot areas known for drug dealing.

Neighbourhood Inspector James Walker from Nottinghamshire Police has outlined his team's work for the month of January.

Insp Walker said the area was facing drug dealing issues, with addicts using a series of phone boxes dotted across The Meadows to get hold of their supply.

A BT phone box in the Bridgeway shopping centre was the busiest in the county, being used to make a staggering 3,000 calls a year.

Police worked with BT to have the phone box removed and the drug dealing started to calm down.

Problems then began to form around the Toll Bridge red phone box, close to the tram line at Meadows Embankment.

People were ordering their drugs from the phone box and then using the drugs under the bridge.

The pay phone inside was removed in August.

It has now moved to phone boxes in Launder Street and Risley Drive, according to police.

A camera has been set up in Launder Street near to the telephone box, with plans to install CCTV in Risley Drive and at Cavan Court as well.

Residents in The Meadows said it was a welcome move which would help catch criminals in the act or put them off going there.

Insp Walker said: "The team continue to gather and develop intelligence across the area to support enforcement action.

"There are 21 live drug offences that are currently being investigated by the neighbourhood team and in each case a suspect has been arrested.

"The Meadows team are spending the majority of their time patrolling reported drug hotspots in response to community concerns.

"Those areas highlighted as being an issue are Gritley Mews, Risley Drive and Launder Street. We are still working with Community Protection and BT with a view to reducing the impact the phone boxes have on drug dealing in the locality."
