Police confirm woman who fell from A46 bridge was 'pronounced dead at the scene'

Police have confirmed that a woman has died after she fell from a bridge over Leicester Western Bypass at Wanlip.

Emergency services were called to the southbound carriageway of the A46 yesterday just after 1pm.

Police said that they received two calls at the same time with one reporting a collision involving a white Transit van and the other detailing the woman's fall, reports LeicestershireLive .

The closure was the third in four days on the A46.

Police were at the scene yesterday afternoon are trying to establish the circumstances surrounding both incidents.

Both southbound and northbound carriageways between the Anstey/Beaumont Leys turn and the junction of the A6 were closed until 6.30pm.

Motorists were being advised to seek an alternative route or expect delays.

The police statement said: “Police were called to the southbound carriageway of the A46 just after 1pm having received two calls simultaneously relating to a woman who had a fallen from a bridge and a collision involving a white Transit van.

“The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.”

Anyone who witnessed either incident is urged to contact Leicestershire police.

On Monday a man died following a crash between a box van and a lorry on the A46 westbound at Wanlip.

The driver of the box van was pronounced dead at the scene of the collision, which happened at the junction with the A6, for Birstall.

On Tuesday a two car crash shortly after 8am, in which one person was injured and taken to hospital, caused severe congestion for much of the morning.
