Three dead, four injured after 4WD rolls on Kakadu Highway

The car rolled about 6 kilometres north of Cooinda Lodge.

Three people are dead and another four are injured, with two of them yesterday expected to have limbs amputated, following a car crash on the Kakadu Highway.

The car carrying seven people rolled on the Kakadu Highway about six kilometres north of Cooinda Lodge at about 12:30pm Saturday.

Four injured patients were transferred to Darwin by CareFlight just before 5.00pm and then to the Royal Darwin Hospital. They are now in stable condition, the hospital says.

On Saturday, a spokesman said two of the injured people might have limbs amputated, and another had a severe head injury.

Road users should keep clear

The CareFlight spokesperson said it sent two crews, each with a doctor and a nurse, just before 1:00pm.

First responders to the crash had been the Jabiru Fire Brigade and the Jabiru Community Health Centre, as well as aviation services from Cooinda Lodge.

A CareFlight spokesperson said when its doctors and nurses arrived they found "Jabiru Clinic staff already treating multiple casualties requiring urgent attention".

NT Police asked road users, particularly those in smaller cars, to avoid the area as the road will remain closed until the Major Crash Unit has investigated the scene.

The road is not expected to reopen until nightfall at the earliest.

High-clearance 4WD vehicles can get around the crash scene on a make-shift track.
