Police confirm they are investigating death of man in Penshaw as murder

Police have confirmed that they are investigating the death of a man in Sunderland as murder.

Detectives have asked anyone with information to get in touch "as soon as possible" and say they are determined to bring those responsible to justice.

Emergency services were called to Avondale Avenue, Penshaw, shortly after 3am on Saturday after a report of concern for a 55-year-old man.

Paramedics took the man to hospital with serious injuries but he died a short time later.

Two men, aged 47 and 36, arrested on suspicion of murder remain in police custody at this time.

A third male, aged 38, who was also arrested has since been released without charge.

Detective Chief Inspector Sharon Chatterton, leading the investigation, said: “This is an incredibly difficult time for the victim's family and they are being supported by specialist officers.
