Police confirm they are investigating cause of Bedlington explosion

Police have confirmed they are investigating the cause of a fire which sparked a huge explosion visible almost six miles away.

Homes in Bedlington were evacuated on Saturday night after flames engulfed a shed, packed with gas canisters and cylinders.

A dramatic blast followed, caught on camera in Seaton Delaval, with a bright red flash filling the skyline.

Five fire crews tackled the flames into the early hours of Sunday, after moving local residents into Contract Gym, on Station Road.

Police are now probing the cause of the fire with a Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson confirming that officers are looking at CCTV as part of that investigation.

And a Northumbria Police spokesperson added: “We can confirm we have launched an investigation following the large garage fire in the Bedlington Station area on Saturday.

“Officers attended the scene alongside other emergency services and a number of residents were temporarily evacuated until the blaze was extinguished.

Thankfully no one was injured or harmed during this incident.

“A number of enquiries have already been carried out but the exact cause of the fire is still unknown at this stage however, we will continue to work alongside Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service to establish the circumstances behind this incident.

“Anyone with information is asked to contact police by using the Tell us Something page on our website and quoting log 1250 270321."
