Teenage Leeds United fan charged with assaulting officer at Middlesbrough match

Cleveland Police have confirmed that a 19-year-old Leeds United fan has been charged in relation to the assault of an officer at the Championship tie against Middlesbrough at the Riverside Stadium.

The Whites won 1-0 thanks to Mateusz Kilch's goal in first-half stoppage time and although the "overwhelming majority" of fans caused no issues at all, there was one incident that marred proceedings.

The north east police force initially said this morning that a fan had been arrested at the match - but they have now announced that the suspect is a young Leeds supporter and has been charged.

The 19-year-old has been charged with assault by beating of an emergency worker and obstructing a constable in the execution of their duty.

Match commander Supt Sharon Cooney said: "I would like to thank the overwhelming majority of law-abiding people who attended the game tonight, watched the match and supported their team.

"Inevitably, there were a minority of people intent on causing disorder and officers looked to deal with those sporadic incidents promptly, effectively and in the safest possible manner.

"The man will appear at Teesside Magistrates Court on Friday 13 March."

Leeds fans were held back inside the Riverside Stadium after the match in a bid to reduce the likelihood of clashes between both sets of supporters.
