Police confirm no third party involvement after body recovered from the River Wear

Police have confirmed that they do not believe there was any third party involvement after a man's body was found in the River Wear.

Northumbria Police were called to Lion Place, in South Hylton, close to the river, at 11.18am on Saturday, where a man's body was recovered.

The man has since been identified and officers have informed his next of kin who are currently being supported by specialist officers.

A spokesperson has since confirmed that they do not believe there is any third party involvement and said a report will be made for the coroner.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: "Shortly before 11.20am on Saturday we received a report of a body found in the River Wear near Lion Place.

"Emergency services attended and carried out a thorough search of the area and river, recovering the body.

"The man has since been identified and his next of kin informed. They are currently being supported by specialist officers.

"There is not believed to be any third party involvement and a report will be made for the coroner."
