Police confirm four arrests after fans were left bloodied by shocking violence at Barnsley vs Leeds

South Yorkshire Police have confirmed that they made four arrests after football fans were left bloodied in the shocking violence that marred Barnsley's clash with Leeds on Sunday.

The Championship encounter at Barnsley's Oakwell Stadium was overshadowed after Leeds took the lead through Arsenal loanee Eddie Nketiah in the 84th minute.

Celebrations spilled over in some parts of the stadium, resulting in violent clashes with local police officers.

Punches are alleged to have been thrown at Barnsley stewards, and the two clubs have announced they are "working together" to assess the crowd trouble which marred Sunday's derby clash at Oakwell.

South Yorkshire Police have also launched an investigation following the arrest of three people on suspicion of public order offences and one for assault.

A club spokesperson said: "Barnsley Football Club and Leeds United Football Club are greatly disappointed by reports of violence at yesterday's game and will be working together to assess the matter."

Leeds fans clashed with stewards in the away end towards the end of their side's 2-0 win and, in a separate incident, fighting also broke out in the east stand.

There is no suggestion that the fans seen in the pictures are among those who have been arrested.

One fan is alleged to have ran around the perimeter of the pitch from the away end to threaten home fans, but was hauled away by officers.

Some fans were left bloodied by the violence.

Asked about the crowd trouble, Leeds manager Marcelo Bielsa said: “I feel pity that something like that happened, but I didn't see it.”

It is unclear what started the violence, but it is suggested that some Leeds fans were in the home end of the stadium.
