Police confirm cause of death of man hit with pickaxe handle

Police today released the findings of a post mortem examination into the cause of death of a man struck in the head with a pickaxe.

The 59-year-old victim is believed to have been hit with the handle of a pick-axe and suffered "a heart attack" during an incident in Walton on Sunday.

Officers were called to Emery Street following a report of a group of people fighting at around 1.30pm.

After suffering what police said was "a heart attack" after the blow police believe was caused by the handle of a pickaxe, he was left in a critical condition and taken to hospital.

Sadly he died in hospital on Tuesday morning.

Now police have confirmed that a post mortem examination has concluded the man died of "natural causes" but they are continuing to probe the street attack.

A Merseyside Police spokeswoman said: "A Home Office post mortem has confirmed that the gentleman died of natural causes.

"An enquiry is still underway into an assault which took place in Emery Street, Everton on Sunday, January 26."

One woman who lives in the area told the ECHO: "When police arrived I heard children crying their eyes out about what happened. It broke my heart.

"I wanted to go and get them and take them away.”

Emery Street was cordoned off by police and forensics officers examined the scene in the aftermath of the incident.
