Police confirm cause of death of man at centre of Kirkby murder probe

A man killed after men burst in to his home died of asphyxiation, it has been confirmed.

A post mortem examination of victim Thomas Edmunds has revealed the 36-year-old's cause of death.

He was attacked by two men who entered his home at 10.30pm on Sunday after it was said his dad answered a knock at the front door.

Mr Edmunds was left with a serious head injury before the thugs fled the scene on Clorain Road in Kirkby.

Types of asphyxiation include strangulation, choking or smothering.

A third arrest has now been made - of a 38-year-old man from Old Swan.

Two earlier suspects, aged 32 and 34, from an undisclosed area, remain in custody.

Detectives have said the attack was targeted.

Police are appealing for any witnesses or anybody with information to contact them.

A Merseyside Police spokesman said: "Our investigation continues and anyone with information is asked to contact @MerPolCC or 101 quoting ref. 21000297827.

"Alternatively, you can contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."

Friends and neighbours referred to the 36-year-old as "Tommy."

One woman told the ECHO: "Tommy wasn't a loud bloke, he kept himself to himself and just got on with things.

"I would often say hello to him as he went past.

"I can't believe this has happened, killed in your own home.

"It was a Sunday night, after 10pm, he should have been safe."

Another said: "Tommy hasn't lived here too long, but he was never any bother.

"He's lived at the house with his family, we're devastated for them."
