Police confirm beloved Airdrie man died in house explosion

POLICE have confirmed the body recovered from a property destroyed by an explosion was beloved Airdrie man John McGuigan.

As the Airdrie & Coatbridge Advertiser reported last week, Mr McGuigan’s Ewart Drive property erupted in flames and partially collapsed following the blast which occurred shortly after 3am on June 27.

In the aftermath of the explosion, relatives and friends of the 39-year-old pleaded with him to get in touch.

But police have now told the Airdrie & Coatbridge Advertiser that Mr McGuigan – known to friends as “Bulb” – died in the house fire.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We can confirm a man who died in a house fire in Airdrie on Saturday, June 27, was 39-year-old John McGuigan, from Airdrie.

“The death is not being treated as suspicious and a report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal.”

Occupants of eight neighbouring homes were evacuated following the explosion while firefighters and police worked round the clock to ensure the remains of the property were made safe.
