Police close section of A697 in Northumberland due to overturned lorry

Police have closed part of the A697 in Northumberland due to an overturned lorry.

Emergency services were called to the stretch of the A697 near the turn-off to Glanton just before 9am on Saturday.

Officers closed the road with diversions being putting in place for drivers until the lorry can be removed.

A spokesman for the North East Ambulance Service confirmed paramedics attended the scene but the driver of the HGV was not injured as a result of the crash.

Due to the complexity of the recovery, the A697 has been shut for more than seven hours.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: "At 8.56am today we received a report of an overturned lorry on the A697 in Northumberland.

"A road closure and diversions are currently in place.

"We are awaiting for the vehicle to be safely recovered from the scene so we can reopen the road to traffic."

Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service said it dispatched a crew to the incident but it was left in the hands of police.
