Police close road after 'serious' car crash on A198 in East Lothian

Police have confirmed they are dealing with a serious road traffic accident in East Lothian this afternoon.

Officers stated just after 1pm on Thursday that they were in attendance at the scene on the A198 near Direlton.

It has not yet been confirmed what vehicles were involved in the accident or if there have been any casualties. However, police have closed the road between Station Road, Direlton and North Berwick.

East Lothian police said: "Police Scotland received a report of a two car road crash on the A198 near Dirleston shortly after 12.45pm on Thursday, 4 June.

"The road is currently closed in both directions between Station Road at Direlston and North Berwick and emergency services remain at the scene."A road closure has been put in place between Station Road, Dirleton and North Berwick. Local diversions are in place. We urge motorists to avoid this area if possible until further notice."

The A198 is the main coastal road connecting the East Lothian towns and is often busy for vehicles.

The road has seen major crashes in recent years, with an 83-year-old woman losing her life in an accident in 2017, and only last year a two vehicle crash caused a large fire on the road near Gullane.

Edinburgh Live contacted Police Scotland for further comment.
